inside a tilly and the buttons printed pattern

Hello again! I've been sewing up a bunch of fun new things to wear and promise to have them photographed and posted soon, but in the meantime I wanted to share a Tilly and the Buttons printed pattern, for anyone who hasn't purchased one before! (Like me, until just the other day!)

I ordered both of her new patterns, FIFI and BETTINE. Tilly's whole brand is designed around garment patterns your can use to learn to sew your own clothes. The Bettine seems especially straight forward and a great beginner dress, but let's open up Fifi to see what you are really getting when you order one of her printed patterns!

The envelope is a nice, heavy paper, with all the details you'd expect on the back. The flap is held in place by a resealable sticky patch.

The sides expand out, which I suspect will come in handy when trying to cram all the pieces back inside later. (Who's ruined a big 4 envelope by trying to put the pieces back inside?)

Inside we get a full-color booklet on heavy paper, with both written and visual instructions as well as other handy tips for making your pattern, especially for a beginner who might not be used to sewing jargon or techniques.

And of course, the pattern! These are also printed on really heavy paper! I will choose to trace mine, and these will stand up to a lot of wear.

I'm very pleased with my purchase, even having to ship it from the U.K. Tilly has put a lot of thought into creating a high-value package here that seams easy to use and will stand up to a lot of use. I'm sold! Can't wait to make something and show you!

an indie love affair with sbcc, bhl and tilly!

I wish I had been able to make more for Sewing Indie Month, as I would have loved to make another By Hand London Georgia Dress or tried something from DIY Dixie, but I guess travel and Me-Made-May got in the way a little. But don't be too disappointed! I do have something fun to show you to end Sewing Indie Month; playing with patterns and tutorials by Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick, By Hand London, and Tilly and the Buttons!

After my success with SBCC's Lemon Drop Top earlier this month, some folks suggested I try their Tonic T-shirt. And I thought, "how about pair it with a circle skirt? I've wanted to try the By Hand London Circle Skirt App! I could combine them to make a sleeveless red dress!" Well... that didn't work so well. The waistline would not lay right, and my added pleats to try to fix it only made it worse. 

It may look nice here on the hanger... but it's lying to you!

I was able to salvage the skirt using the waistband pattern piece from my Elle Pants, and learned that the Tonic T-shirt has a great fit, so I sewed a straight-up Tonic T-shirt in lovely black rayon jersey. I love this t-shirt pattern! But now my outfit needed something else.....

...like a matching Brigitte Scarf from Tilly and the Buttons! I was going to wear it as a cute headband, but once I added the shoes with this outfit I felt a ponytail bow was the perfect finishing touch! It has this fun 50's vibe! 

... or is it a little bit Drizella/Anastasia from Cinderella? :)

a yellow, linen, picnic blanket skirt!

And second, I made Tilly and the Button's Picnic Blanket Skirt!

I'd been pining after a mustard yellow skirt for a couple seasons (even though yellow is usually NOT my color), pinned some inspiration photos on pinterest.com, then spied some yellow linen on sale at Joann's a few months back and took the plunge! I originally planned on making a pleated, paper-bag waist skirt using the Adventures in Dressmaking tutorial, but eventually concluded that a paper-bag waist may not quite be the most flattering look for me. I'd been wearing my Gertie Gathered Skirt a lot, so decided to try Tilly's skirt which had a similar silhouette.

I made only a few changes from Tilly's design. Her's calls for cutting one rectangle for the skirt back, and two rectangles for the front, once stitched becoming a long piece roughly 2.1x your hip measurement. I had two yards of fabric, and my hips measurement is 38", so I decided instead to cut just my fabric lengthwise for the entire skirt piece putting me at just under Tilly's recommended measurement BUT a seamless piece. That did mean I had to omit the side pockets since there were no longer side seams. In retrospect, I wish I had dealt with the extra two seams to have had those pockets.

I also didn't include the interfacing in the waistband, but not on purpose! As I was moving along I thought to myself, "weird how she doesn't put interfacing in the waistband..." Actually, she does tell you to do that in an earlier step that I obviously wasn't paying enough attention too! It's totally wearable (I've already worn it on more than one occasion in fact!), but it would lay a lot nicer with the interfacing.

Another thing I will do differently in the future involves the placement of the buttons. I put the first one on the waistband then  the rest evenly 3" apart, but the skirt likes to pull apart that section where the waistband meets the skirt. Interfacing may have helped with that as well, but in the future I will start with the waistband button, then a button directly below the waistband AND THEN start with spacing them 3" apart.

On the plus, the linen was lovely to work with! It held a nice crease when creating the plackets, and it was just nice to work with a simple woven again. Remember how I needed to re-learn to use the automatic buttonhole foot on my mom's (now mine) machine? It turns out most of the feet she gave me don't actually go with the machine, including the buttonhole foot! I know it had a buttonhole foot so next time I'm there I will search for it, but in the mean time I FREE-HANDED THE BUTTON HOLES AND THEY CAME OUT AWESOME! (Can you tell I'm a little proud?)

 And topped it all off with lovely brass buttons. :)
